a recent BILL submitted by senator LONI HANCOCK (d-oakland) pushes for a bike lane to be integrated on the west span of the bay bridge. the new eastern span, which is still under construction, has a bike lane, but that span ends at treasure island. if this bill passes, cyclists will be able to ride from san francisco to oakland and back.

i would say that generally, i’m pretty nonplussed by fixie freestyle. it’s unimaginative, cliqueish, and pretty lame. but i DO appreciate real ingenuity, and even in fixie freestyle circles, i see some shit that just boggles my mind sometimes.
such as THIS. a block-long fakie wheelie, with BARSPINS. fuck me.

i’ve been meaning to post this for a while. at 230 on new year’s morning, 24-year-old mariel mentink of chicago was riding her bike with a friend in austin, TX, where she was visiting. a speeding gray SUV hit her and drove off. her friend was struck as well, and was not able to get the license number. mariel was left with significant, life-threatening injuries.
both legs were broken (both arms, too?), her spine had several broken vertebrae, her pelvis had fractures in it, her skull was riddled with cracks, and her brain was swollen. (she WAS wearing a helmet, thank heavens.) over the time between then and now, she’s had surgeries on one of her legs and on her spine, she’s been on and off of medications and tubes to keep her sedated while her brain healed, and she’s been slowly and steadily recovering. i’ve tracked her progress over at the BLOG that her parents set up, and as of this posting, mariel is starting to walk again. she seems to be having a generally easier time with the left side of her body than the right, but she’s learning to form words again, along with various other brain healing. the family is really good about keeping that blog updated, and about toling what the doctors are saying, specifically relevant to what’s expected and what’s not in these sorts of situations.
mariel started her ordeal in an austin hospital, but is since back in her home of chicago at a physical therapy hospital.
i have literally cried while reading that blog — mariel is a beautiful and creative person, and FAR too young to have to be dealing with a life reboot of this nature. she’s the youngest of four siblings in a family of urban cyclists, she’s an avid seamstress who was trying to start a business selling hats for cyclists at local bike shops, and she also has a degree in graphic design. her poor family, i just can’t even imagine. but she IS recovering, and all signs indicate that she’s recovering really well, too. the physical therapy hospital where she’s staying now will not keep patients if they don’t show signs of being able to recover. and they’ve extended her stay twice now, so that’s a FANTASTIC sign.
